Hand Eye Visions – Direct Animation Screenings
As part of Cine-City 2010, Lighthouse is working with artist and curator Ian Helliwell, to screen three programmes of direct filmmaking work, titled Hand Eye Visions – Direct Animation Screenings.

Of the various forms of animated film, direct animation is unique in that the camera is completely bypassed for the main realisation of the work, and no equivalent exists with video or digital techniques. This is because the work is a tactile process where the filmmaker creates the image through direct physical contact with the filmstrip. This series of three Hand Eye Visions programmes sets out to provide an overview of some of the most interesting work by many of the leading exponents in the field today.

Blast Theory is running a trial episode of an ‘SMS Drama’ Ivy4Evr -
created by Blast Theory together with Tony White. It’s a one episode
pilot commissioned by Channel 4 Education.

The trial runs from 10th-16th October and it all happens via SMS -
it’s about 17-year old Ivy who becomes part of your life over seven
days, getting ever more intimate with you. For a week she’ll tell you

Neuroscience and the Guitar

Cajal, Albeniz, and a parallel journey of discovery

At the beginning of 20th century, the great Spanish neuroanatomist, Cajal, was establishing the new world of neuroscience. At the same time, the Spanish guitar was enjoying its golden age, with Albeniz, Barrios, Tarrego, and Granados. The two apparently distant paths of human achievement are compellingly brought together by Sussex University’s renowned neuroscience researcher, Dr Anil Seth, with composer and guitar virtuoso, Richard Durrant, revealing the unfolding of the world of neuroscience – the science which underlies the great mystery of what and who we are. Dr Seth’s history of his subject will combine with Richard Durrant’s brilliant playing of the music of that age, illustrated by a breathtaking visual presentation in film and graphic imagery by animation artist, Kate Genevieve and projection and installation artist, Malcolm Buchanan-Dick. As the worlds of neuroscience and the guitar are drawn together, Dr Seth intriguingly looks into the consciousness, and the sub-consciousness, of a great musician at work.

Councillors look set to approve a £9.5m revamp of an industrial tower block in Brighton to form a centre for digital media firms.

It is thought transforming New England House near Brighton Station could add around 200 more jobs to a building already housing around 800.

A report on the plan is being considered by the city council’s ruling cabinet on October 14.  It says a favoured option is renovating the building and expanding available workspace.  It would also be marketed and managed in a way that emphasises the benefits of such companies innovating and working together in one place.

The city council is working on the scheme with Wired Sussex and the University of Sussex. It follows a council report in 2007 which identified a need for more premises for the expanding digital media and creative sectors.

While no decision has made on how it would be funded, councils typically raise money either by borrowing or going into partnership with the private sector.

No existing companies would need to move out of the building.

The council is also holding open the option of developing an additional building on an adjacent car park.  This could accommodate another 300 jobs, bringing the total to over 500.

Digital and creative industries are seen as having a key role in reviving and sustaining the city’s economy.  Already Brighton & Hove is home to a cluster of around 1500 media-related companies employing 10,000 people, plus another 5000 freelance individuals.

Council leader Mary Mears said:   “This building served our industries in the past but needs work done if it’s to serve the industries of the future.  Building the economy is one of our priorities and digital media will be crucial to that.”

Professor Bob Allison, University of Sussex Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, says: “The University of Sussex has thriving research activity in  digital and social media, which is a key growth area for the University.  The development of a vibrant hub for companies from the digital and creative industries will therefore help the University and the city to work with and attract interest from companies nationally and internationally.”

Wired Sussex represents over 1600 companies and freelancers across the county, most of which are Brighton based.   The body delivers a wide range of services, initiatives and networks designed to help companies create, innovate and grow.

Wired Sussex MD Phil Jones said “A renovated New England House would stand as both a statement of how far the digital and media sector in the city has come and also testament to its future ambition. This is about creating a world class centre for innovation and collaboration in the creative industries, something which can help underpin Brighton’s future prosperity. It is great to be moving forward with the project.”

A central technology and media hub would help businesses collaborate, share social spaces, connect up with university expertise and access hi-tech networking facilities.

New England House is a council-owned former factory complex dating from the early 1960s.  It needs money spent on weatherproofing and to stop it deteriorating.

Officials say investing in the building would extend its life by 40 years and create a centre for hi-tech and creative firms. The 11,500 sq m building currently houses 87 companies employing around 800 people.  Presently around 30 per cent are members of Wired Sussex.

The Brighton Photo Fringe is a vibrant event that engages with photographers, lens-based artists and a diverse public audience. Every two years Brighton Photo Fringe coordinates a city-wide festival of exhibitions and events in partnership with Brighton Photo Biennial.

This October Brighton Photo Fringe returns with its largest festival to date. Continuing to grow and expand, this year includes over 130 exhibitions, projects and events spreading as far as Hastings and Chichester.

The Brighton Photo Biennial

For its fourth edition, Brighton Photo Biennial 2010 will present New Documents, curated by the internationally renowned photographer, editor and curator Martin Parr. The Biennial Opening Weekend begins on Friday 1 through to Sunday 3 October, comprising a full and exciting programme of in conversations, talks and panel events offering festival visitors the change to meet many of the invited international artists, to discuss and debate ideas shaping current photographic practice.

BPB 2010: New Documents will reflect the immediacy and vibrancy of contemporary photographic practice, the eclectic passions found in collections of historic and vernacular photography and new commissions informed and inspired by the diverse communities and contexts of Brighton & Hove.  BPB 2010 will be the world’s first frame free photography festival and the curated programme will be viewable entirely on foot presented in the public galleries and spaces of Brighton & Hove.  A programme of related exhibitions will be on show at venues across the South East. Brighton Photo Biennial works in close partnership withBrighton Photo Fringe, collaborating on various projects and creating joint platforms, including the Fringe’s keynote exhibition and the portfolio reviews.

Queer Pecha Kucha Night Brighton is the ninth Pecha Kucha to take place in Brighton and Hove, taking place as one of several Queer Culture events at Lighthouse in October.

Queer Pecha Kucha contains presenters who are both responding to our exhibition Queer Brighton, and also presenters who are interested in the Pecha Kucha format. Pecha Kucha gives people the opportunity to raise exciting, creative and sometimes controversial ideas, using the Pecha Kucha system, which is fun and fast-paced. The unique format of Pecha Kucha gives each presenter six minutes and 40 seconds to share 20 images each held for 20 seconds on a screen, keeping the event dynamic and fluid.

Join us for what promises to be a fun, speedy and possibly racy evening of presentations.

This event is a collaboration between Lighthouse and Pecha Kucha Night Brighton.
