Richard Gray: The American South In Context
2pm Saturday, 6 November 2010
De La Warr Pavilion
Bexhill
Accompanies the exhibition Myth, Manners & Memory: Photographers of the American South, guest curated by Photoworks, showing until 3 January 2010
Richard Gray, Professor of Literature at the University of Essex, and the first specialist in American literature to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy, will talk about what makes the American South different, special and even strange.
Richard will place the images from this widely acclaimed show in the contexts of Southern history, mythology and literature – with particular attention to how writers from the region have created a place that seems to exist somewhere between the actual and the imagined.
